Gunmen killed three people and set houses and food silos ablaze in Dangoro village, Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, police said Monday.
The state police spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar, said in a statement that the attack occurred about 10:30 p.m. on March 28, when armed bandits carrying AK-47 rifles stormed the community through the Nahuche District.
Abubakar said the attackers fired sporadically and set homes and silos on fire before a joint team of police officers and vigilantes responded.
“Upon receipt of the report, a joint team of police operatives and vigilante members swiftly mobilized and responded to the scene,” he said. “The team engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel, successfully repelling the attack and forcing the criminals to flee into the bush with possible gunshot injuries.”
Three people, including a member of the Community Protection Guard, were killed in the attack, he said. Five others sustained gunshot wounds, while four suffered varying degrees of burns.
The assailants also destroyed several houses, food silos and livestock, including goats, according to the statement.
All injured victims were taken to the Federal Medical Centre Gusau, where they are receiving treatment and are responding positively, Abubakar said.
He added that efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the perpetrators.
The Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Muhammad, assured residents of continued security operations and urged the public to remain calm, stay vigilant and provide credible information to authorities.
