Police in Anambra State have arrested two women accused of trafficking a 16-year-old girl to Ghana, authorities said Tuesday.
The suspects, identified as Uzoma Nwabueze and Precious Monday, were arrested in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area, following a report of a missing minor, police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga said in a statement.
Ikenga said operatives attached to the Ozubulu division acted on technology-driven intelligence on the evening of Jan. 26 to arrest the suspects over the disappearance of Oluebube Chukwuma, 16.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the case and disclosed that the girl is currently in Ghana, police said.
Following the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further investigation.
Police said the investigation would focus on how the minor was taken to Ghana and on identifying and arresting other individuals linked to the alleged trafficking.
