2027: Peter Obi Says North Is Nigeria’s Biggest Economic Goldmine

Peter Obi says he is best positioned among potential 2027 presidential contenders to transform northern Nigeria, describing the region as the country’s most valuable but underutilized economic asset.

Speaking on Monday , the former Anambra state governor said no other candidate could match his plans to unlock the North’s potential through investments in agriculture, security and grassroots development.

“Nobody can do what I intend to do in the North,” Obi said. “We can make more money from agriculture than we make from oil.”

He rejected the notion that success in the region depends on endorsements from influential political figures, saying voters’ needs — not elite backing — would determine electoral outcomes.

Asked about possible support from politicians such as Nasir El Rufai and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso , Obi said he was open to collaboration but stressed that “Nigeria is bigger than individuals.”

Obi argued that the country’s challenges stem more from leadership failures than a lack of resources, calling for unity across ethnic and religious lines.

“We need leaders who will unite us as a country. Religion and tribe should not define our future,” he said.

He also emphasized that improving security, particularly in the North, is essential for development.

“You cannot achieve development without first ensuring security,” Obi said.

Obi added that lessons from other countries could be adapted to Nigeria’s context to drive growth and stability.

He also urged the government to support a stronger opposition, saying it is critical for accountability and democratic governance.
