Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday alleged that elements within the opposition are sponsoring insecurity and bombings in parts of the country to distract President Bola Tinubu’s administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio made the claim at the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Nigeria Revenue Service in Abuja, where he praised Tinubu’s leadership and ongoing economic reforms.
He said recent security incidents may be politically motivated and aimed at creating fear and undermining the government.
“You are seeing insecurity today. It is even increasing because elections are approaching,” Akpabio said. “As soon as elections are over, watch what happens. Within the first two weeks, you may not hear of any bomb blast because some people are sponsoring it to distract the government.”
The Senate president did not name any individuals, groups or political parties allegedly involved.
He said Tinubu’s performance had strengthened the ruling All Progressives Congress, making it harder for opposition parties to mount a credible challenge. He also said nearly 32 governors are now aligned with the president, compared with fewer than 18 at the start of the administration.
“They say this man is doing well in many areas. If governors are aligning with him, it is because he is supporting the states effectively,” he said.
Akpabio added that opposition parties were struggling with internal crises and lacked cohesion ahead of the next election cycle.
He defended Tinubu’s economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies, saying the move had prevented fiscal collapse and reduced corruption linked to subsidy payments.
“From day one, you said fuel subsidy is gone,” he said. “It is clear that entrenched corruption was feeding on subsidy.”
He said the reforms had created fiscal space for infrastructure development and pointed to ongoing road and bridge projects in the Federal Capital Territory as evidence of progress.
Akpabio also commended Tinubu for appointing individuals outside the ruling party into key government positions, describing it as inclusive governance.
He urged Nigerians to focus on the administration’s achievements rather than political distractions.
