The All Progressives Congress, civil society organizations and political commentators criticized former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, over his remarks suggesting Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara had joined the APC.
Fayose had made the claim during a television interview, stating that Fubara’s recent actions aligned more with the APC than the Peoples Democratic Party. His comments stirred political tension amid an already heated crisis in Rivers State.
APC’s Rivers chapter quickly refuted the claim, describing Fayose’s remarks as misleading and a misrepresentation of facts. Party spokesperson Darlington Nwauju said, “Governor Fubara has not officially joined our party, and any such claim is premature and baseless.”
Civil society groups, including the Niger Delta Development Watch, also condemned Fayose’s statements. “At a time when Rivers needs stability, such comments can deepen divisions and derail ongoing peace efforts,” the group said in a statement.
The Rivers political crisis has escalated in recent months, with a fallout between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The rift has triggered impeachment threats, court battles, and legislative standoffs.
Observers say Fayose’s remarks risk inflaming partisan tensions further. Political analyst Kenneth Ibe said, “Leaders should be focused on conflict resolution, not fueling speculations.”
Fubara has not publicly commented on the claim. Meanwhile, the PDP leadership has reiterated its confidence in the Rivers governor and called for unity within the party ranks.
