George Raises Alarm Over Alleged APC–INEC Plot, Warns of One-Party State

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olabode George, has raised concerns over an alleged plot by the ruling All Progressives Congress and the Independent National Electoral Commission to undermine Nigeria’s democratic system ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement, George accused both institutions of actions and pronouncements suggesting an attempt to prevent the emergence of any presidential candidate other than President Bola Tinubu in the next election cycle. He warned that such developments could erode democratic principles and threaten political stability.

George, the Atona Oodua of Yorubaland, likened the situation to the biblical account of Abimelech in the Book of Judges, describing it as a reminder that injustice and abuse of power carry consequences. He called on political leaders across party lines to resist actions that could weaken democratic institutions.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s political history, George said the country’s size and diversity require a functional multi-party system to sustain participatory governance.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro blamed internal party actors for ongoing crises within the PDP and other political parties. Speaking on Arise News, Moro said the instability was largely self-inflicted by party members, including governors, lawmakers and leaders.

“I think that political actors are primarily responsible for what is going on,” he said. “If you look at the crisis in political parties, it is generated and aggravated by the actors.”

Moro dismissed suggestions that the PDP is divided into factions, insisting there is only one party. He also referenced the controversial Ibadan convention, saying non-compliance with a court order deepened internal divisions.

He noted that disagreements among key stakeholders, including Nyesom Wike and Seyi Makinde, contributed to tensions surrounding the choice of Ibadan as the venue.

Despite the disputes, Moro said the PDP remains operational, adding that a recent convention monitored by the electoral commission produced a recognized leadership.
