Former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso says he has not taken a final decision on his political future but confirmed ongoing consultations with opposition leaders amid uncertainty within the African Democratic Congress.
In a statement posted Saturday on X, Kwankwaso said he is engaging leaders of the National Democratic Congress and the Peoples Redemption Party as part of wider consultations on his next move.
He dismissed reports suggesting a definitive realignment, saying, “No final decision has been taken regarding my political future or that of my political associates.”
Kwankwaso pointed to ongoing legal disputes within the ADC, including a Supreme Court ruling affirming the David Mark-led National Working Committee while sending aspects of the case back to a lower court. He said the development has left the party in a “precarious position.”
He also cited a separate Federal High Court ruling that invalidated the party’s recent convention, as well as an application by the attorney general seeking the party’s deregistration.
“The ADC has now been forced into this difficulty,” he said, comparing it to legal challenges that previously affected his exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party.
Kwankwaso said consultations were underway with political stakeholders to determine his next steps, adding that any decision would be made public at the appropriate time.
On speculation about the 2027 presidential election, he said he has not declared any intention to run or endorsed any candidate. He noted his previous runs for president in 2014 under the All Progressives Congress and in 2019 under the PDP, saying he had supported the eventual nominees in both cases.
He also clarified that his absence from recent ADC meetings was due to personal commitments, which he said were communicated to party leaders.
Kwankwaso said he would continue consultations and announce his position formally when a decision is reached.
