Oyo State Gov. Seyi Makinde on Tuesday dismissed speculation that his recent visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was linked to a possible defection from his party, saying the meeting was strictly about governance.
Makinde said the visit focused on national and subnational development issues, including security, economic management and federal–state collaboration, and had nothing to do with partisan politics.
“I am not defecting to any political party,” the governor said in a statement, adding that elected officials must be able to engage across party lines in the interest of good governance.
The governor, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, said discussions with Tinubu centered on policies that affect citizens and the need for cooperation among leaders to address Nigeria’s challenges.
The visit had sparked political speculation amid ongoing realignments ahead of future elections, but Makinde said such interpretations were misplaced and urged the public to focus on governance outcomes rather than political rumors.
