The Nigeria Democratic Congress has distanced itself from results of its recently concluded nationwide primaries circulating on social media, saying only the party’s National Executive Council is authorized to announce the outcome of the exercise.
In a statement issued Sunday in Abuja, NDC National Publicity Secretary Osa Director urged the public to disregard unofficial results being shared online, stressing that the official outcome of the primaries conducted May 28 and 29 remains in the custody of the party’s NEC.
“The general public is hereby urged to disregard the various results circulating on social media as the outcome of the nationwide primaries conducted by the Nigeria Democratic Congress on the 28th and 29th of May, 2026,” Director said.
“The results of the primaries are with the National Executive Council of our great party. They are solely responsible for announcements of results.”
The party did not clarify whether the directive also applies to Saturday’s affirmation of Peter Obi as its sole presidential candidate.
Director said a meeting of the NEC had been convened in Abuja on the directive of the party’s national leader, former Bayelsa State Governor Senator Seriake Dickson, to deliberate on the primaries and other issues arising from the exercise.
“On the order of the National Leader of our party, His Excellency Senator Seriake Dickson, a NEC meeting of the party has been called,” he said.
According to him, NEC members are expected to arrive in Abuja for a pre-NEC meeting on June 2, while the main NEC meeting is scheduled for June 3.
The party assured members and stakeholders that the official list of candidates who emerged from the primaries would be released after the necessary ratification process and before submission to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
“The general public and stakeholders will be availed of the results of our primaries when we send the list of candidates to fly our party’s flag to the INEC,” the statement said.
The clarification comes amid growing speculation over the outcome of the party’s nationwide primaries held to select candidates for various elective offices ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party officials said the emergency NEC meeting is expected to play a key role in ratifying the results and addressing any disputes that may have arisen from the exercise before the final list of candidates is forwarded to INEC.
