Obi signals 2027 presidential bid while campaigning in Abuja council poll

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has again signalled his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Obi made the remark on Saturday while campaigning for the African Democratic Congress candidate ahead of the Abuja Municipal Area Council election in the Federal Capital Territory.

Addressing supporters, Obi linked the AMAC poll to his wider political ambition and urged them to vote for the ADC candidate, describing the council election as critical to his plans.

“This coming election, support us in AMAC; it will help me,” Obi said. “Your support in AMAC is critical to our journey. I am involved and contesting the coming election as number one. When I come back, you will see. I assure you.”

Since Obi joined the ADC, his supporters, including members of the Obidient Movement, have intensified calls for the party to adopt him as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

The ADC, however, has urged restraint. The party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, cautioned supporters against inflammatory rhetoric, stressing the need to preserve unity within the party.

Speculation has also emerged over a possible alliance involving Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, following Kwankwaso’s decision not to join the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Meanwhile, supporters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have renewed calls for Obi to consider a vice-presidential slot, similar to the 2019 election arrangement. Obi has dismissed such suggestions, insisting that he intends to run for president in 2027.

He again urged supporters to mobilise votes for his preferred candidate in the AMAC election, describing their backing as “crucial” to his political journey.

Obi has repeatedly said that if elected president, he would serve only a single four-year term.
